2-D Avatar To Be Pulled From Theaters In China
via Slashdot by kdawson on 1/19/10
SimonTheSoundMan notes that Avatar is being pulled from screens in China for being too successful, and too provocative in its anti-authoritarian message. (The 3-D and IMAX versions will remain.) "The communist nation’s state-run movie distributor China Film Group is unexpectedly yanking the James Cameron-directed blockbuster 'Avatar' from 1,628 2-D screens this week in favor of a biography of the ancient philosopher Confucius starring Chow-Yun Fat. ... According to a report in the Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily, the move was made at the urging of propaganda officials who are concerned that 'Avatar' is taking too much market share from Chinese films and drawing unwanted attention to the sensitive issue of forced evictions."

There were some great questions today. Very well done. (These points were not tangents, but were integral to the class and an important part of what it means to wrestle with these issues).
Sorry we didn't get to watch the entire video. Please feel free to watch the rest at home. Have a great weekend.

Week 1 Review
Grasshoppers, Week 1 went well. I think that it provided a solid intro to basic ethics. Here’s what we did:
- Discussed the Dunning-Kruger effect and related it to our inquiry
- Looked at the rudiments of how to make arguments (PP/C). Applied this to a few ethical positions.
- Began our examination of why we need reasons for our beliefs
- Discussed the idea that not all processes are the same. Some processes are better than others.
For Week 2, remember to read the “How to Make an Argument” paper and listen to the news daily. Also, please remember to do the assigned reading noted in the syllabus. (If you haven’t already done so, please bring in a 1 gig thumb drive).
Have a great weekend!
